Automation and efficiency in nickel and cobalt extraction

The HPAL process efficiently extracts nickel laterite ores, which are challenging for conventional methods. Nickel and cobalt are precipitated as mixed hydroxides using magnesium oxide (MgO). Continuous pH measurement is crucial, as it significantly impacts the efficiency and selectivity of the precipitation.

Customer challenge

The HPAL process efficiently extracts nickel laterite ores, precipitating nickel and cobalt as mixed hydroxides using MgO. Continuous pH measurement is crucial for efficiency and selectivity. However, the abrasive media and harsh conditions cause pH sensors to last only a few weeks, requiring daily cleaning and calibration. This leads to process interruptions and loss of chemicals, nickel, and cobalt. Regular cleaning, calibration, and condition monitoring are essential for reliable pH values.

Meta Nikel chose Endress+Hauser’s CDC90 for automated pH sensor cleaning, calibration, and monitoring. The system is ideal for harsh environments, extends sensor life with strong cleaning agents, and reduces manual effort. It detects deviations or low consumables early, triggering alerts in the control system - ensuring reliable measurements, fewer interruptions, and efficient maintenance.
